About

Defoe is a short science fiction film. Made because it’s the sort of short film I'd like to see at a screening and if no one else was going to do it I thought I should.
I had the idea to do this in the summer of 2007 and when I originally decided this was something I really wanted to apply myself to, the story was a lot longer. The original had an actual space craft and was a lot more ambitious in terms of sets, props and cast. I guess the parts of the story that had to go could one day be short films in their own rights. One day. But for now this was how I wanted this film to pan out; ship wrecked traveller, strange desolate land and of course the fateful clash with one of the locals. The original had the astronaut building himself a make shift craft out of the wreckage of his crashed space ship but ultimately the story is a much neater package without it. I’d been set the task of getting the film under 10mins, so scenes I’d originally wanted in there, had to go. We shot a whole afternoon in the local woods but keeping it in meant it went over 12 mins so it was the only obvious scene to go. And I didn’t want the dream sequence to be any shorter. I still think it holds up as a story. Even without the woods. Any way I hope you enjoy the film. It was a lot of fun to do, and hopefully the next couple of shorts will help pave the way to the first feature. Watch this space.
